There are many reasons why someone might want to contribute to the 'universal commons':
- They can find other people to work with them on their project, enable them to do things they couldn’t do alone, or significantly speed things up
- They are contributing to the wider the community that has freely offered designs for them to build upon
- Satisfaction that other people can benefit from their efforts
- People can customise things exactly how they want them
- Other people can evolve your design further, which benefits you
- The concept of 'copyleft' changes the way people think about to contributing to creative open projects
- Respect from creating a great design that becomes widely used
