There are many reasons as to why someone might contribute to the 'universal commons':
- Can find other people to work with you on your project to enable you to do things you couldn’t do alone, or speed up the project
- Contributing to the wider the community that has freely offered designs for you to build upon
- Satisfaction that other people can benefit from your work
- People can customise things exactly how they want them
- Other people can evolve your design further which benefits you
- Copyleft changes the way people think about to contributing to creative projects
- Respect from creating a great design that becomes widely used
